Imuran Here I Come

Just got off the phone with my GI doctor and she said that the doctor that performed my colonoscopy wants to start me on Imuran. This won’t be happening until the first week of March since I have to leave for Ohio the last week of this month. With how much monitoring I’ll need this is why we decided to wait. I’ll have to have weekly labs done for a month and then probably monthly after that. I really hope that this medicine works without completely messing me up with the possible side effects. I just want to feel normal again.

Luckily the Imuran comes in pill form which works out really well with my work schedule and traveling for work. It would be hard to work infusions around travel especially when I can be gone for more than a week at a time for training for work. Which is nice. I’d rather take pills over shots and IV infusions.

I’m still trying to come to terms with this turn of events. When my doctor first told me I started tearing up. I really thought that we wouldn’t have to head in this direction quite yet. I’ve been trying pretty hard to not just start bawling my eyes out. It doesn’t help that my boyfriend is at work and won’t be home for a few more hours. I’m sure I’ll come to terms with this eventually but it still scares the shit out of me.

  1. It sucks when you have to start taking the “serious business” drugs. I really wanted the Entocort and Lialda to be enough, but it wasn’t cutting it. For what it’s worth, 6-MP (basically the same drug as azathioprine) is the drug that’s put me closest to remission. The frustrating past is it takes 3 months to work. I assume it’s the same way with azathioprine.

    I hope it helps!

    • Yeah I read that it can take 2-6 months for it to start working. Hopefully it starts working sooner than that. I hope it helps too but I’m really hoping that I don’t have any serious side effects from it like I did from the Lialda.
